Driving a Class A Motorhome

Investing in a Class A motorhome can be a great way to upgrade your RV experience. They’re some of the largest rigs on the market, and they can provide you with some of the latest features and most relaxing interiors. However, because they’re so large, they can also be a little intimidating and difficult. Read on for tips for driving a Class A motorhome.

Brakes

When you’re sitting behind the wheel, you’ll probably notice a couple of significant differences between Class A motorhome driving and commuter vehicle driving, starting with the brakes. They’re not going to feel the same as your everyday vehicle’s brakes. This is because your everyday vehicle probably uses hydraulic brakes. They’re great for stopping quickly, but not so great when it comes to maintenance. Class A motorhomes use air brakes, which are safer when a problem does occur because they’re less likely to give out altogether. However, they don’t stop faster if you press on them harder. In fact, the only way to stop is to apply continuous pressure to the pedal. This will slow your braking time so you’ll need to adjust accordingly.

Following Distance

Because of this change, you’ll need to be ready to increase your follow distance by a lot. This is especially true on highways when you’re driving at higher speeds. Even though it’s easy to blame other drivers for crazy behavior, it’s your vehicle that can slam into the back of much smaller cars, so it’s up to you to take responsibility. This means leaving as much as 4 seconds of space between you and the vehicle in front of you. If you can leave more space, then do so. Many drivers may cut you off and take advantage of this space. Just keep calm and carry on. Even if it gets a little frustrating, you’ll reach your destination all the same.
